2009 Show
“I wouldn’t have entered if my husband hadn’t persuaded me. I do this for pleasure”, so said the delighted, first time winner of the handicraft section of the Annual Show on Saturday July 18th - and this seemed to be the key to this show. The number of exhibitors and exhibits were up on last year’s and we were delighted that several new members were winners. The judges were full of praise for both the quality and quantity of the exhibits - “Good to see so many people prepared to make such a commendable effort”, said one of the judges.
Our thanks to all those who joined us in the afternoon - over a hundred - and to Olive and Millie for preparing and serving the refreshments, to Margaret and Joan for running the raffle, to Bertha for her ‘ Bus Stop’ game and last, but by no means least, to Lady Penelope for her kind words before presenting the prizes and then drawing the raffle.
Well done to all of them and well done to everyone who entered. The high standards set by entrants will mean that this year’s winners trophy holders will have to work much harder next year to retain their prizes. Remember “ If you grow it - ( bake, preserve, make, design, paint, draw or photograph it) - SHOW it”! 38 people did so this year, lets make it at least 45 next year!
The winners of the main trophies were:-
Graham Scriven,
Shane Sillitt,
Margaret Chapman,
Joy Scriven
Other worthy winners were Sheila Garner, who retained the Domestic Shield for most points in the Cookery classes, Sally Howeld who won the Floral Art Shield for most points in the Floral Art classes, Gillian Wheatley who was awarded the RHS Certificate of Merit for the best exhibit in the Cookery classes ( a mouth watering Victoria Sponge Sandwich) and finally, the Junior Challenge Trophy was retained by Chloe Sillitt.
took first prize in the Top Vase award ( 2nd place - Margaret Chapman, 3rd place taken jointly by Hilary Gregory and Angela Prater) and Joy was also awarded the Jim Bullard Cup for most points in the Sweet Pea classes.who won the Rose Bowl for most points in the Rose classes and the Mary Evans Trophy for most points in the Arts and Crafts classes.who was awarded the Henham Cup for most points in the show ( a very versatile exhibitor) and the John Cooke Trophy for most points in the Flower and Pot Plant classes.who was presented with the Banksian Medal for most points in classes 1-48: the British Legion Cup for most points in Fruit and Vegetable classes : the RHS Certificate of Merit for best exhibit in the show ( some juicy looking gooseberries) and 1st prize for the Top Tray of vegetables (2nd place - Clive Akers, 3rd place - Derek Whiting)
If you want to join the society do it now, subscriptions go up to £3.00 per year in October.
